The Learning Hub is the place I used to think about when I first got to prison, I can officially say the experience up to date has still been surreal. My Voice is being heard and it isn't just for me my voice represents anyone that has lost someone in prison, anyone that felt as if their basic needs were overlooked in prison, anyone that felt as if their mental/physical health deteriorated due to prison and much more. I have sat around tables with people that can help solve issues that a lot of people have experienced. I believe that by collaborating closely with various stakeholders and partners, we can truly create a program that will significantly benefit many people. Although I am far from being an expert and there are times when my English may not be perfect, our teamwork has been exceptional. Together, we are making great strides towards achieving our shared goals and positively impacting those we aim to serve.
In 2020, during my time in prison, I came across an advertisement aboutorking with User Voice to help improve the prison environment. Intrigued, I joined the forum, where I vividly remember sitting around a table discussing the canteen sheet and expressing what we believed was necessary. For the first time as a prisoner, I felt genuinely heard. Although prison was my home at that time, it often seemed like no one was interested in understanding the residents' needs; the forum became a vital space for open dialogue. Fast forward four years, and I am now engaged in a project with User Voice, preparing to enter prisons again, this time as the listener. This opportunity means so much to me, as I know firsthand what it feels like to speak without being heard. While I understand that I may not be able to address every issue, I am committed to engaging with the residents and making a meaningful effort to amplify their voices.
I cannot express enough how welcomed I feel by the team; the network within the NHS is truly endless. The support I have received has been phenomenal, making my experience both enriching and fulfilling. Being surrounded by such a dedicated group of individuals has helped me to thrive, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities and encouragement I continue to receive.
